Ferry or Train to Palermo?
Since I had a Eurrail pass, of course I was going by train. Even though my very plain (95 Euro) sleeper car from Rome to Villa san Giovanni where you make a short transfer by ferry over to Messina wasn’t included in the pass, it was still worth it. A sleeper car is always worth it regardless of the comfort, or lack of… Whenever there is an option of travelling (horizontally) over night, I pick that route.
But the route from Messina to Palermo was waaaaay to long, and boring. Therefore I opted for the (overnight) ferry from Palermo back to the mainland, and Napoli. I had the great honour of sharing it with Kathy from the Canadian bible belt. It was so very interesting to hear her story about growing up under these conditions, including home schooling… It very much reminded of the experiences Tara Westover who wrote Educated: A Memoir had. Organised religion… scary. I’m so very grateful to Kathy for sharing her story.
