The Architecture of Bergen, Norway

Why Bergen? I guess I had heard people say that Bergen is SO very pretty, and it’s far enough to experience plenty of the beauty of Norwegian nature from the windows of a train.

I’m sorry to admit that I did not find Bergen that beautiful. That’s not the same thing as Bergen not being beautiful. I guess it might have been a case of too hight expectations. The old wooden part of town is picturesque. But all the wooden facades are severly destroyed by lack of, or poor preparation, and layer after layer of plastic paint. If there is anything that lookes sad on a facade, it’s plastic paint. There is only one thing that can make a building uglier apart from plastic paint, its PVC (plastic) windows.

Plastiv is an amazing material, and can be used for sooo many things. It does need to be recycled and not littered. But painting wood that is located outdoors, doesn’t only look ugly. It also destroyes the underlying organic material, that wood is. End of story.

Neighbourliness & or a Massive Sence of Humour

After having beating the large drums of whining, I’ve got to say that this hue of green is the most entertaining I’ve seen in Bergen. Who… do not only pick… this hue, but also executes?

Bergen seems to have a very liberal, if any detailed plans of aethetics when it comes to the architectural expression. And someone likes to make a statement. I wouldn’t have been surprised if this happened in some parts of Denmark. But here…

I’m NOT in conspiracy theories. But I’d like the saga behind this is a pissed neighbour, making sure it’s neighbours get a daily reminder of who manifests a loss in an argument by manifesting. Green. I love it 😊

Let’s paint it all…

While we’re at it. Cupola in matte lilac. I do wonder what they teach at the Architectural university of Bergen?

Cause mono chromatic colouring must be one. I suspect the fire protecting rules when it comes to building must have developed after this cute town was build. Just like in many many other places, including Sweden for that matter.

Unesco’s World Heritage List

Narrow and cosy in the wooden parts of town must have contributed to Bergen ending op on the Unescos World Heritage List. Which ought to make it even more intresting to maintain. The poor painting job, as well as choice of paint is in relation to Unesco’s list baffles me.
